Journalism Program

Our major in Journalism, like all programs in the Jandoli School, is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

The Journalism program goes beyond teaching students to write clearly and concisely. Our students will also learn to:

  • Logo for the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communicationcraft messages in ways that are appropriate for specific audiences
  • research critically, filter the results and present them in a cogent manner
  • have a practical understanding of their chosen field of work
  • integrate broad-based learning into their professional activities
  • understand that with their power as communicators comes a moral and ethical responsibility
  • understand the meaning of citizenship in the context of their professional activities and their personal lives
  • recognize and overcome biases, prejudices and limited viewpoints (including their own) so that they can communicate effectively in a diverse world

Journalism majors work for their degree

Like all programs in the Jandoli School of Communication, the Journalism major requires 400 hours of internships.

It's an impressive number, but it's a requirement our students readily achieve thanks to numerous on- and off-campus opportunities. What's more, many of our graduates say their internships not only made them job-ready right out of school, but also opened doors of opportunity.

Journalism majors also enjoy an experiential learning opportunity that puts them in professional situations with close faculty mentorship.

Dream fulfilled

As a major in the Jandoli School, Kerry Byrnes, '93, rose early each day to watch the "TODAY" show before heading off to class. Today she's working for the show as a producer in New York City.
